Agricultural Beneficial Insect-pests: Ally Insect-pests and Others in Organic Farming

Honey Bee A Beneficial Insect

Agricultural Beneficial or Ally Insect-pests are known as ‘Mitra Kit’ (‘मित्र कीट‘ in Hindi). There are many species of Insects and Vertebrates recognized as beneficial insect-pests in agriculture. They are very important species in a micro ecosystem. Ecological balance is possible with the presence of these species in Organic Farming where use of pesticide is restricted. They are found naturally within crop ecology. Some species of beneficial insects are reared before releasing into a crop field.

The other types of beneficial insects are commercially important species of insects. They are known to benefit crop and farmer at the same time. For example, honey bee.

1.1 Beneficial Insects in Agriculture

Beneficial insect does not harm standing crop. A beneficial insect can be of two types- 1. Natural enemies of harmful insect-pests. 2. Insect which produces food materials.

1.2 Harmful Insects in Agriculture

Group of insect-pests which damage plant, partially or severely, are known as harmful insect-pests.

1.3 Difference between beneficial and harmful Insect-pests

S. No.Beneficial InsectHarmful Insect
1.Beneficial insect or other species of small animals are friend of farmers. They benefit standing crop acting as an enemy of agricultural insect-pests.Harmful insect-pests are a threat to commercial plant-crops. They cause economic loss to farmers at different stages of their life cycle.
2.Many species of beneficial insects are susceptible to pesticides. Many species of harmful insects are resistant to pesticides or can become resistant.
3.There are a few species those can be counted as beneficial insects. The number is unlimited.
4.Example- Honey Bee in pollination.Example- Tomato fruit borer which damage tomato fruits.

1.4 List of Beneficial Insect and Others

  • Honey Bee.
  • Lizard.
  • Lady bird betle.
  • Praying mantid.
  • Predatory spiders.
  • Birds.
  • Fish.
  • Trichogramma

2. Classification of Beneficial Insect-pests

(a). Which help in plant breeding

  • Honey bee
  • House fly

Honey Bee

A honey bee collecting pollen from a flowering tree. While doing so it helps in pollination between the two same species of plant.

Honey bee is a social insect. The main work of a  honey bee is the collection of pollen grains and converting it into honey.

How does honey bee help farmer and benefits crop?

Honey be is known for honey production. It collects honey from flowers. Doing so a honey bee helps in pollination among different plant-crops of a crop-ecology.

House Fly

House fly is a harmful insect for human health. But in some crops like mango it is a very important pollinator. House flies from a mango orchard should be saved.

(b). Which helps in improving soil condition.

  • Earth worm.
  • Mycorrhiza

Earth Worm

Earth work is ‘a farmer’s best friend’. The main work of a earthworm is to make soil fertile. Other functions of a earthworm are as follows:

  • To make pores in soil.
  • To unearth hard soil.
  • To convert agri-waste into organic manure e.g. ,vermicompost.

Eisenia fetida is a species of red earthworm which is used in vermi-composting business.

Mycorrhiza is a microorganism. It is a species of fungus. It makes colony around plant roots. In this process mycorrhiza absorbs soil nutrient which is transferred to the beneficiary plant.

(c). Which help in crop protection

  • Lizard.
  • Lady bird beetle.
  • Praying mantis.
  • Predatory spiders.
  • Birds.
  • Fish.
  • Trichogramma.

Praying Mantis

Praying mantis is a  ferociously predator. It prays on larva and small insects of different harmful insects. Praying mantis can be seen during major cropping season i. e.,  kharif season (rainy season).

Trichogramma spp.

Trichogramma is an egg parasite. The adult female deposits eggs inside the eggs of host. Hence, it kills the harmful species before the emergence.

Lizard is a small creature. It devours insects of horticultural and agricultural plant-crops. A single lizard can devour many insects in single day. It inhibits on trees, small shrubs and holes in crop field.

Birds are familiar to all farmers. Although a bird can itself be a pest of field and horticultural crops. Bird perches are used in many crop field e.g., chickpea, to attract birds as a controller of chickpea pod borer.

Fish in rice field (fish-cum-rice-cultivation) is beneficial for farm owner. Fish like cat fish can devour any type of insects in a rice field. Insect which falls in water from rice plant is instantly devoured by the hybrid cat fish.

Predatory Spiders

Many species of predators are enemy of harmful insects. The well weaved rounded webs made by predatory insects can be seen on the top of a rice crop. Small insect like hoppers are captured by these webs. Sometimes big insects like locust can also be captured by the sticky web.

Lady Bird Beetle
