White Shade Net- Shade Nets are high density plastic material. After the application of these nets in agriculture, the area of protected cultivation grew rapidly because of low cost as compare to glass house (traditional method of protected cultivation). These can be be fixed on a permanent or temporary structure. White Shade Net is one of them.

1. Introduction: White Shade Net

White shade net is a covering material used in protected cultivation. It is a type of shade net, another is green shade net.

2. Characteristics

Colour: Colour is white.

Type of mesh: Mesh is made from the polyethylene threads. Density of can be different.

Stability: The mesh is uv stabilized. It is resistant to high temperature.

Size: Size is measured in microns. The density is high.

2.1 Required Characteristics

Dead Load: Dead load is related with all types of light and heavy materials supported by the net. Dry leaves, accumulated layers of fine sand etc., are dead load. A net should bear periodically accumulation of these unwanted things.

Live Load: Live load is related with sudden weight mounted on establish plants house. It is very important thing to be tackled by the plant house itself. Wind storm, hail storm are considered as live load. Net should be strong enough to withstand these loads.

Life Spawn: Life spawn of a netting mesh depends on many factors. Biotic factors such as birds and farm animals are cause of tearing of net. Although, this problem can be avoided. The net should run for a long period withstanding abiotic factors e. g., ultraviolet rays, hail storm etc.

3. Importance

Cost: The cost of this shading mesh is lower than the other cladding materials. Other cladding materials like glass, fabric, green shade net require more budget.

Easy Installation: Installation is easy.

Specific Use: This is crop specific. The mesh is used for making vegetable plant house.

Multiple Growing: Crop can be grown in all season.

No need of fan and pad system,


In Early Season Cucurbit Production: Seeds of cucurbits (melon, cucumber, are shown one month earlier inside a white shade net house house than the normal condition.

For Vegetable Crop Production: Vegetable crops are grown under white shade net house. Crop grown inside a white shade net house are- Tomato, brinjal, okra, cucumber.

For Rice Growing: Protected cultivation of rice can be done in a covered area. Mainly, research works are conducted in this type of plant house.

For Flower Production: It is very good for the cultivation of flower crops such as marigold, aster, gladiolus, tuberose, etc.

Making Low Tunnels: Semi circular low tunnels can be made using white net.

In Rice-Cum Fish Farming: Water becomes warm during day time in rice field. Warm water in a shallow rice field is lethal to sensitive species of fishes. Deep tunnels are formed around the rice field. These tunnels are covered with shade net to provide shelter to fish.

5. Installation of Shade House

GI Frame: Installation is technical. It is done by the technical team of contractors (companies).

Wooden Frame: Installation is easy. It doesn’t require any technical skill.

6. Cultivation Practice

The plant house include- drip system and fogger system.

Example- Tomato (Indeterminate varieties of tomato).

6.1 Preparation of Soil

Soil inside plant house should be plough by power tiller. Country plough can also be used. Ploughing is same done in open field condition.

6.2 Seeding Material and Seed Sowing

Indeterminate varieties of tomato are used as seeding material. Initially, seeds are shown in raised nursery beds. These beds can be prepared in open field filed conditions. FYM should be mixed with soil in sufficient amount, @20-25 ton per hectare.

6.3 Transplanting

Plants are transferred from nursery bed to strait ridges at 3-4 leaf stage.

6.4 Fertilizer

Dose of fertilizer is same as open field condition. Fertilizers can be applied using pesticide sprayer or by derivation through drip system.

6.5 Intercultural Operation

Weeding: Hand weeding is done.

Pruning: Diseased parts of plants are pruned.

6.6 Plant Protection

Same as done in open field condition if necessary.


Mulching: Mulching is done to get best result. Production will increase significantly.

(c). Spring is used to clip the net with structure.

8. Care and Maintenance

Physical Damage: Physical damage is done by the farm animals and other wild animals. Don’t let different species of unwanted grass near the mesh of net house. Farm animals like cow and Bullock can damage the mesh while grazing.

Fence Around The Net House: Fence is very important to protect the mesh from physical damages. Fence should be made from iron mesh or brick.

Flame: It is very vulnerable to flame. A spark can destroy the whole plant house.
