1. Introduction

Type– New Irrigation System for small areas.

Classification– Irrigation (water distribution) without external source of energy.

Origin– From drip irrigation system.

Application– Irrigation for small area.

Field of Application: Horticultural plant-crops e.g., vegetables, fruits, flowers etc. Protected cultivation e.g., shade-net house.

1.1 Drip Irrigation System

Drip irrigation is an advance and most efficient way of crop irrigation.

1.2 Gravity Drip Irrigation System

Here, gravity means- gravity of earth. The three main points of gravity drip irrigation systems are:

(a). Main source of water is located below water tank.

(b). Water tank set at a fixed height is supplied from main source of water.

(c). Water stored in tank is distributed among the plants by the gravity of earth.

2. Importance of Gravity Drip Irrigation System

Installation Cost: Installation cost is very low. It can be installed by the farmer itself.

No Energy is Required: The main important thing of this system is no external energy is required, such as electricity. Although, energy is required to fill the tank but the required amount of water is distributed by the gravity of earth.

Flexibility: Flexibility is another important part of this system. Tank can be sifted to any other part inside a crop field or farm or garden.

Care and Maintenance: Care and maintenance is easy.

3. Used For/In

3.1 Vegetable garden

List of vegetable Crops:

  • Bringal
  • Tomato
  • Okra.
  • Cabbage.
  • Cauliflower.

Flower Plants:

  • Rose.
  • Marigold.

3.2 Ornamental and Public Garden

Excellent for edges and hedges.

3.3 Small Plant Nurseries

Growing plants of small plant nurseries can be irrigated with GDIS.

3.4 Terrace Garden

The GDIS is undoubtedly a great option of irrigation in terrace gardening. In this case small to medium water tank can be used.

3.5 Protected Crop Cultivation

Establishment of plant house is very expensive. More than 10% cost can be cut adopting GDIS inside plant house. Establishment should be done by farmers, itself.

4. Types

4.1 According to Tank

Plastic tank: It is common type of GDIS. High quality plastic tank is used as water holding body.

Cemented tank: Cemented tanks are yet to be applied at field level.

4.2 According to flexibility

Portable System: Main unit of GDIS can be transfer from one place to another place. Tank used in this system is plastic tank.

Fixed system: Main unit of GDIS is fixed. Tank used in this system is cement tank.

4.3 According to Source of Water Supply

Electricity– Bore well (submersible pump), tullu pump (centrifugal water pump).

Fuel: Diesel pump.

5. Installation of GDIS

The system can be installed in two ways:

(1). Contract with a company

(2). Buying Required Things and Installation

5.1 Required Structure and Materials

Tank: Water tank is main structure.

Pipe: Main and subsidiary pipes.

Water Source: Bore well, pond, well, canal.

Water Lifting Pump: Diesel pump, tullu pumps.

5.2 Installation

5.2.1 Selection of land for Farm: Selection of land area for farm is important. Land should be plain. Uneven land is not suitable fuel for GDIS.

5.2.2 Layout: Square or circle.

5.2.3 Marking for tank: Maximum distance of the last point of selected land from the centre point (DRIP) is 20-30 metre. Tank should be installed at the centre of the field.

5.2.4 Establishing System

(a). Connecting source of water to water tank: Water tank is connected with main source of water using strong water pipe. It is permanent. In this situation an steel pipe is used.

(b). Connecting main pipe to water tank: Main pipes are connected with water tank. Four outlet (one outlet each side of tank) are fixed with the main pipes.

(c). Connecting subsidiary pipes to main pipe: Establishment of subsidiary pipe is most important thing for the uniform distribution of water among the plants. Length of subsidiary pipes and distance between two subsidiary pipes greatly affect the uniform distribution of water. Two combinations are possible:

(1). Length can be shorten for some crops if row to row distance is very close.

(2). Length can be extended if row to row distance is more.

6. Daily Operation

Fill the water tank with water at evening or any time. Now open the outlet of water tank.

Outlet is closed after irrigation.

7. Things to Remember

(1). Fill the water tank with clean water. Fix water filter at the inlet of water tank.

(2). Don’t establish multiple tanks (small tank) for one specific area. One large tank is sufficient.

8. Explanation of Post Related Words

Edge

Edges are ornamental plants. Height of a edge not more than the height of knee.

Hedge

Hedges are also ornamental plants. The height of hedge is more than 2 metre.
