Introduction: Need of Irrigation System
Rainfed agriculture is based on seasonal rainfall. In many countries, cultivation of crops like rice and other, depends on annual rainfall. This season is known as rainy season. Rainfed agriculture in countries like India, starts with the arrival of Mansoon. Rainfed agriculture can be observed during whole year in Equatorial countries like Indonesia and others.
Crop failure can become a common problem once rainy season overs, if there is no water supply (external water supply). Even low-water-requirement crop can show the symptoms of crop failure. Winter season vegetable crop and the summer season’s Summer Rice require external source of water supply. Water from various resources is transported to the plants using different water irrigation systems.
Development of Irrigation and Irrigation System: From Old to Modern Days
Irrigation in Old Age
Canal irrigation system and underground irrigation system can be seen in the history Indus Vellay civilization.
Irrigation in Middle Old Age
Don (दोन)
Don is a piece of waterproof thick cloth or leather. It is a traditional irrigation technique.
Rahat/Rehat or रहट
Rahat includes a wheel with numbers of buckets embedded on it. The wheel is run by the animal power to lift the water from wells.
Old techniques are still practiced. Some techniques are specific to some specific plant-crops.
New Techniques
Diesel Pumps
Diesel engine water pumps are very powerful machine used for the irrigation of a vast area. Fuels are required to operate the system.
Electric Pumps
Electric pump is run by the power supply. It is useful for home and kitchen garden. Small plant and vegetable nurseries also use electric motor pumps for nursery beds.
Advance Technique
Drip (explained further)
Sprinkler (explained further)
Classification of Irrigation Systems
Simple Irrigation Systems
Thala
Surface irrigation (Kachha Nala)
Surface irrigation (cement canals)
Bed Irrigation
Water Tanks
Modern Age Irrigation Systems

Drip Irrigation System
What is Drip Irrigation System?
Drip irrigation system is very effective irrigation system. The outlet of main water source is connected to a network of perforated pipes.
Importance: Why Drip Irrigation System?
It is very efficient. Requires less amount of water.
Suitable Crop in Drip Irrigation System.
Most of horticultural crops.
Sprinkler Irrigation System
What is Sprinkler Irrigation System?
Spnkler irrigation is 360 degree irrigation system.
Importance: Why Sprinkler Irrigation System?
It is very efficient after drip irrigation system.
Suitable Crop in Sprinkler Irrigation System
- Chickpea.
- Wheat.
Row and Furrow Irrigation
What is Row and Furrow Irrigation System?
It is a method of irrigation between two rows of crops.
Importance:Why Irrigation System?
It is important for crops like potato and reddish in village areas.
Thala Irritation System
What is Thala Irrigation System?
Thapa is a plate like structure around the base of a plant.
Importance: Why Thala Irrigation System
It is specific application of water.
Suitable Crop in Thala Irrigation System
It is suitable for fruit plants and some vegetable crops like gourds and pumpkin.
