1. Introduction

Flowers and other ornamentals e. g., ornamental foliages are very soft in nature. They are perishable in nature. All ornamentals start loosing beauty and quality rapidly once harvested. It is a Farmer’s or producer’s duty to maintain its beauty and quality. Pulsing is a solution to this problem in some extent.

Actually, Pulsing in floriculture is adding something extra to enhance the vase life of already harvested flowers. Pulshing in rose industry is a best example of the topic ‘Pulsing‘.

1.1. What is Pulsing?

Pulsing is a post harvest treatment in flower crops in which Vase Life of loose flower is enhanced using sucrose solution.


Vase Life: It is the duration of time in which ornamental foliage and flowers are able to maintain its fresh form without loosing quality.


2. Method of Pulsing

Pulsing is a chemical method of enhancing flower’s vase life. It requires different components and involves step by step procedure.

2.1 Required Materials

  • Sucrose.
  • Chemicals– various chemicals are used in pulsing of cut flowers. Different chemicals are used for different species of flowers. List of some chemicals use in pulsing as flower preservatives is as follows:
    • Benzyl adenine.
    • 8-HQC.
    • AgNo3.
  • Clean water– Clean water is required for good management practice. Clean water means drinking water.
  • Tools– Blade, scissor.
  • Water holding structure– Glass jar, plastic jar ceramic jar etc., with opened mouth.

2.2 Procedure of Pulsing

Preparation of Solution for Pulsing (Example as Practical)

  1. Take one litre fresh and clean water in glass jar.
  2. Make different solutions adding following things with water:
    • Sucrose.
    • AgNo3.
    • 8-HQC
    • Vittiy acid.
    • Clorine.

Note– Quantity (in percentage) is different for different flowers. We will see different pulsing-solutions for different flower.

Further activities

  1. Select vigorous flowers– It will help in keeping flower’s life for a long period.
  2. Detach the flowers from the plant along with stalk/stem.
  3. Trimmed the lower part of stalk/stem.
  4. Place it in prepared solution for pulsing.

3. Importance of Pulsing

  • Prolonged vase life: Flowers are very delicate. Keeping quality is low. Pulsing is a temporary solution for this for a short but important period.
  • Flowers are able to maintain petals quality.
  • Application of pulsing: pulsing treatment for flower is applied in various places such as flower exhibition, home decoration, practical works, research works etc.

4. Pulsing of Different Flowers

Rose

Stem Length: Length of stem should be kept up to 40 cm.

Hours– Hold the stems in prepared soluti on for 24 hours.

Chemicals Used- STS, 8- HQC, Chlorine, Sucrose, AgNo3.

Combination 1: Sucrose 5% + 8- HQC – 200 ppm (Ref. 1).

Combination 2: Sucrose 7% + AgNo3 30% (Ref. 2).

Vase Life: Up to 10 days (combination 1) and more than 10 days (combination 2)

Gladiolus

Hours: Hold the stalk in prepared solution for 24 hours.

Chemicals Used: 8- HQC, AgNo3.

Combination 1: Sucrose 20% + 8- HQC- 200 ppm (Ref. 1).

Combination 2: Sucrose 5% + AgNo3 50 ppm (Ref. 2).

Vase Life: more than 8 days.

Carnation

Hours: Hold the stalk in prepared solution for 24 hours.

ChemicalsUsed: 8- HQC, Citric acid.

Combination: Sucrose 10% + Citric acid 100 pm + 8- HQC- 400 ppm.

Vase Life: More than 7 days.

Note: Stem length of flowers can be adjusted.

Pulsing is not only a subject of research or practical. It is an art to improve flower’s vase life.
