1. INTRODUCTION: Rural Horticulture Extension Officer

A Rural Horticulture Extension Officer or RHEO is  Class Three (Class 3), non-gazetted officer. Field works are the major part of the duty a RHEO. This is a governmental post. Clearing written exam taken by vyapam or other equivalent exam conducting agencies is necessary. The post of Rural Horticulture Officer is similar the post of Rural Agriculture Extension Officer. It is known Gramin Udyan Vistar Adhikari (ग्रामीण उद्यान विस्तार अधिकारी in Hindi).

2. Eligibility

Undergraduate degree is required to become eligible for RHEO. UG degree with following subjects is necessary to become eligible for rural horticulture extension officer:

2.1 B. Sc. Horticulture.

2.2 B. Sc. Agriculture.

2.3 Agricultural Engineering (B. Tech.)

3. Post of RHEO: Exam, Preparation of The Exam, Selection and Posting

Entrance Exam: Post is created by the Department of Horticulture (director), exam is taken by the vyapam or any other exam conducting governmental departments.

Preparation For The Exam: Preparation can be done individually. Joining a coaching centre is not necessary but getting notes. Although, some students can get right direction by joining coaching centres.

Students have to appear for exam. After exam, selected candidates are posted in different parts of a state.

4. Works of A RHEO

4.1 Field Works

  • Visiting farmer’s field.
  • Giving technical advise.
  • Selection of farmers.
  • Occasionally, training to farmers.
  • Completing departmental targets.

4.2 Office Works.

  • Attending weekly or monthly meetings.
  • Maintaining records.

5. Field of a RHEO (work area)

A RHEO is given 5 – 10 or more or less panchayats (पँचायत). He has to complete all the targets allotted to him in these villages.
