(A). PART 01- INFORMATIONAL

1. Topiary and Topiary Making

1.1 Topiary

TYPE: Living art, Live Plant, agri-business, artificially modified plants, ornamental.

ASSOCIATION: Beautification, lawn, home garden, plant nursery, landscaping, academic works.

USE: Beautification, decoration, landscape gardening.

ORIGIN: Europe.

Example: Topiary of Jacques Cartier Park, Canada. Castelo Branco, Portugal.

Topiary is an art in which plants are given a desired shape. Shapes of natural objects are given priority. Ornamental shrub, foliage, vine plants etc. are used…. Plants used in topiary making should have following characteristics (from 1 – 5):

(1). Free from Diseases.

(2). Uniform appearance: Plant should grow in all direction.

(3). Evergreen: It is a symbol of art in a garden. Expensive central objects in a lawn like a fountain or statue can be replaced with this art. So, the plant which is being used should be evergreen.

(4). Hardy plant: Hardy plant means- plant should able to withstand shocking damages while cutting and pruning. It should also resistant to insect and diseases.

(5). Should produce new flushes after pruning.

1.2 Topiary Making

Topiary making is an art, an agribusiness and a subject of higher education which includes B. Sc. Agriculture, M. Sc. Agriculture, Ph. D. in agriculture etc. It is related with ornamental horticulture. Topiary making work is practiced by the following (from a – c):

(a). By students during academic work.

(b). By professionals e. g., ornamental plant nurseries and governmental plant nurseries.

(c). By non-professionals for own home garden.

3.1 Required Skill

Two skills are required- first is pruning and second is training. Pruning is very important skill to make an excellent topiary.

3.2 Required Materials

  • PLANT.
  • SECATEURS FOR PRUNING.
  • WIRE FOR TRAINING.

3.2.1 Plant (select one from given list)

3.2.2 Secateurs for Pruning

Three types of secateurs can be used:

(a). Small secateurs: These are small handle secateurs and can be used easily by one hand.

(b). Medium sized secateurs.

(c). Big secateurs: These are long handled secateurs. It can be used for big and tall shrub, plant etc., using both hands.

3.2.3 Wire for Training

Wire mesh are used to make a frame to develop a topiary. The plant is canopy is placed inside the frame. This metal frame work as a cage for plant.

Wire is also used in bonsai making for training of plant. But, in bonsai making wires are use to support the plant for few days.

4. Procedure

4.1 Selection of Plant

Plant should be selected according to required characteristics. Healthy growing plant should be selected. A plant can be grown at home or purchased from a plant nursery. Mature plants are considered best.

4.2 Making frame/Cage:

The wire is arranged and fixed according to desired size and shape. Always use stainless steel cage. Wielding machine can be used for engineering works. Wild two wires properly.

A piece of wood can be shaped into an animal or bird. These sculptures are used in topiary making. Creepers and runners are supported by this wood sculpture. Plant covers around the wooden frame develop into a living object.

Globe Cage: Use iron mesh.

Birds and Animals: Use iron wires and wooden frame and sculpture.

4.3 Growing or Purchasing a Plant

Selected special of a plant can be purchased from a plant nursery or it can be frown in home garden. Propagation can be done by seed, cuttings, grafting, rooting, layering etc. These plant should be grown separately in container. A plant grown on garden-land, holds soil surface firmly.

4.4 Developing Structure

Fixing wire cage or frame: Select a place. For example – centre of lawn is an ideal place to develop a topiary as centre object. After selection of place fix the frame and transplant the living object inside the frame.

Plants are planted closet to the frame while using wooden frame of sculpture, so it can grow over it.

5. Care and Maintenance

5.1 Pruning

Time of Pruning: Pruning is done when unwanted growth occurs. Growth which is out of shape should be pruned immediately. At the same time diseased parts should also be pruned. Don’t go wrong with the shape while pruning.

Amount of Pruning: Light pruning is required. Amount of pruning depends on the growth habit and growth rate of the plant.

5.2 Manuring

Type of Manure: Use more amount of organic manure. Well decomposed manure should be used.

Time of Manuring: Manuring should be done at regular intervals.

Amount of Manure: It should be balanced. For example – 10 gm of N should be given per plant at first time.

5.3 Watering

Time of Watering: Water can be given daily, if possible. During winter irrigation after a fortnight is required.

Amount of Water: Amount of water is not an issue. Watering can be managed with little amount of water.

5.4 Plant Protection

Insect-pests and Diseases: Insect-pests and diseases will be treated by local application of pesticides.

Ask for treatment through comment or mail.

(B). PART 02: TOPIARY MAKING AS AN AGRIBUSINESS

Topiary making is a very good option of agribusiness for unemployed people. It can not be started at any place if your primary purpose is money making. Places like urban areas, big cities are ideal place to start a business with topiary.

Price of a simple plant is 5 – 10 rs., or sometime ‘zero’. Grafted plants are sold for 50 rs. to 300 rs. per plant. Flowering plants are sold for 15 to 150 rs. per plant. A portable topiary is sold for thousands depending on quality and size.

The business can be started with low invest.
