1. Introduction: What is Urigo?
Urigo is a bio-product or organic matter secreted by the worms (earthworms).
How is Urigo Formed?
The earthworms secret liquid materials through epidermal orifices. The reason behind this is – ‘The earthworms lack urinary tract’. This liquid is known as the urine of earthworm or urigo.

2.1 Anti Fungal
The liquid secreted by the worms contains beneficial chemicals, harmful for various species of fungus. The chemicals check (inhibit) the growth of some specific species of harmful fungus.
2.2 Growth Promoter
This liquid contains growth promoting substances. The beneficial and major substances are growth promoting hormones.
3. Method and Materials
3.1 Required Equipments/Material
- Water Bowl.
- Earthworm (live).
Things to Remember:
Drum: Plastic drum should be used. It should be strong enough to bear the weight of compost.
Stand: Steel stand or iron made stand should be used.
Water Bowl: It should be made of plastic materials.
Sand: Fine sand should be used.
Stone: Fine pieces of stone should be used.
3.2 Method or Procedure of Extracting Urigo
Step 01: Fix the Stand
Fix the stand on marked place as shown in image (Image 01).
Step 02: Setting Drum on Stand
Place the drum on stand as shown in image (Image 01). Make a small hole at the centre of the drum before planing on stand.
Step 03: Setting Bowl
Place the bowl just below the drum as shown in picture (Image 01), so it can receive liquid leaching through the hole.
Step 04: Filling the Drum
*Mix the fine pieces of sand and stand.
*Make the first layer inside the drum using the mixture of sand and fine stone as shown in picture (Image 01). The thickness of the layer should be 3 inch.
*Now, fill the entire empty space of drum using compost as shown in image.
*Now release live earthworms.

4. Activities of Worms Inside Drum
These live worms move from up to down regularly inside the drum. These process is necessary. The process creates many long holes (worm-holes) inside compost body.
What Happens Next?
The earthworms regularly use these holes to navigate inside compost body. The liquid secreted by the worms through the epidermal pores sticks on the surface of the holes.
Now, pour a litre of water from top the side of the drum.
The water flows through these holes. While doing so, it mixes itself with the fluids released by earthworms. And, the mixed fluids are then collected in bowl placed below the drum.

Ans.: 900 ml of urigo mixture can be obtained after pouring each 1 litre of water.

Ans.: To use this organic matter, 100 litre of water is added to 900 ml of urigo. Now, it can be applied on affected plants using sprayers e.g., pneumatic sprayers.
Question 03. Which species of earthworm should be used?
Ans.: The savigny earthworm or Eisenia fetida should be used for this purpose.
